Trained at the École de Sèvres between 1902 and 1906, where he met the glass paste practitioner Henry Cros, Gabriel Argy-Rousseau very quickly showed his interest in this particular technique. After hesitating about the direction of his career, he decided to devote himself to the art of pâte de verre and founded the Société des Pâtes de verre d’Argy-Rousseau in 1921. From then on, and for nearly fifteen years, he created nearly three hundred and fifty models of vases, lamps, bowls and night lights, produced in a few dozen copies. The vase known as the Vase with squittels in grass – whose animal nevertheless resembles a dormouse – dates from 1928. However, this example with its brown and ochre colours could be slightly later. Offered by the glass art lover Barlach Hueur, this vase with its generous shapes and size enriches the collection of decorative art objects in glass paste at the Conches museum, which devotes particular attention to this field.
