Trained in the 1980s at the Secondary School of Applied Arts where he learned to cut stone, then at the glass department of the Higher School of Fine Arts in Bratislava, Vladimir Zbynovsky has been creating sculptures combining glass and stone. Through skillful technical stages of molding and thermoforming, he adapts glass to stone, exploring the thresholds that come alive in light, and questions the notions of time, memory, the sacred and perception. In 2002, for the annual Verriales exhibition at the Galerie Internationale du Verre de Biot, the artist created in the same way a sculpture formed of a sphere symbolizing the representation of the void and the cosmos. By attracting light into the hollow that extends it, the sphere became an improbable threshold opening onto an unknown area. The following year, Zbynovsky created this sculpture in the same spirit as the previous one but larger in size, initially intended to be presented outdoors.
