Bernard Perrot (1640 – 1709), an exceptional glassmaker rediscovered
Speaker: Benoît Painchart
Under the Ancien Régime, Altare, a small town in Liguria (Italy) specializing in the “art and science of glassmaking” since medieval times, gained considerable importance through the emigration of its specialized glassmakers.
The historical and socio-genealogical study of the world of Altarese glassmakers conducted fifteen years ago within the GenVerrE association made it possible to discover a line of female transmission as a common denominator for the establishment of their glassworks in the Kingdom of France. (1550-1750).
It made it possible to precisely identify (finally!) one of his heirs, Bernardo Perrotto, Frenchified Bernard Perrot, founder of the Orléans glassworks in 1668. Endowed with multiple skills, he would experience an exceptional destiny, so well that he is currently considered the most important glassmaker of the French, even European, 17th century. And research into it continues to continue!
