The contemporary glass creations of Philip Baldwin and Monica Guggisberg are closely linked to two stages experienced by the artist couple. The first concerns their training in blown glass techniques carried out in Sweden at the end of the 1970s, from which they retained a taste for the simple and refined forms of Scandinavian design. The second is linked to their discovery during the 1990s of Venetian glass engraving techniques using a wheel. By combining these two artistic trends in the history of glass, they have been creating unique works since the early 2000s, which in recent years have tended to evoke in a metaphorical way the existential challenges of our societies. Thus, the amphora entitled La Bombe population, created in 2022, on the occasion of the inaugural exhibition of the new François Décorchemont glass museum, is both a contemporary reinterpretation of this thousand-year-old object and a work evoking through the motifs concentric the overpopulation of the planet.
